A new report from the American Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery shows the number of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures has increase to nearly 11.9 million procedures performed in the United States in 2004. This is a 44 percent increase for the prior year.
At the top of the non-surgical cosmetic list was the popular wrinkle-erasing injections of Botox and Liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure performed.
With the ever increasing number of reality television shows and media coverage on plastic surgery, how does a patient find the right doctor? Dr. Paul Nassif of Beverly Hills has compiled a list on what to watch for when selecting a plastic surgeon.
Top Bad Examples:
1) The office has the atmosphere of a discount department store.
2) The surgeon appears more like a salesman than a physician. The surgeon is rude or insensitive.
3) The surgeon is vague about their medical background and experience doing the procedure.
4) The surgeon makes excuses about providing patients to talk to about the procedure.
5) You have difficultly communicating with the surgeon. They makes it seem like you are taking their valuable time.
6) The surgeon glosses over the risks of the procedure. They make it seem like it’s unnecessary to talk about problems that could occur.
7) The physician fails to discuss or fully explain the recover process.
The surgeon tries to sell you more procedures than you actually want. If you feel like you are getting a hard sell, watch out.
9) The physician fails to give you a written quote.

If the upper eyelid skin is heavy, we want to do an upper lid lift where we make an incision on the crease of the skin and remove the upper eyelid skin.
However, in regard to the lower eyelids, you have to be very careful because if you remove too much skin you can have lower lid retraction, where the lower eyelid pulls down.
If there is excess eyelid skin, you can do conservative therapies such as using a laser to tighten up the skin, or a direct excision
In regard to the upper eyelids, sometimes the primary cause of a sagging eyelid is a lower eyebrow. In that situation we want to make sure that we perform an endoscopic brow lift.

What questions should one ask during an otoplasty consultation?
-
Will the ears look natural and not “over-corrected”?
-
What is the chance of the ear protruding again?
-
How many do you perform each year?
-
Do you remove any cartilage?
-
Do you use stitches to keep the ear in the desired position?
About the surgery:
According to the American Academy of Facial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an otoplasty procedure begins with an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon will then remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect. In some cases, the surgeon will trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more desirable form and then pin the cartilage back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage.
In other instances, the surgeon will not remove any cartilage at all, using stitches to hold the cartilage permanently in place. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, the surgeon will apply sutures to anchor the ear until healing occurs to hold the ear in the desired position.
Many patients ask what a chin augmentation procedure can address. A chin augmentation will balance out a receded chin, making the angle between your neck and chin more aesthetically pleasing.
However, a chin implant can’t correct a hanging “witches” chin. And it will not help an off-bite.
