Can Laser Hair Removal Treat Ingrown Hairs

Filed under: Hair Removal — Theresa Akbari, R.N. @ 2:55 pm

Question:
I am female with a heavy beard on the underside of my chin going down into my neck. Shaving there gives me terrible rashes and many ingrown hairs. It is always irritated and uncomfortable. Would laser hair removal be able to get those ingrown hairs?

Answer:
Laser hair removal will not get rid of the ingrown hairs.  The hairs do have to be expelled from the skin, shaved, then treated with the IPL hair removal system.  As the areas are treated the incident of ingrown hairs are decreased.  The removal of the hair will prevent re-growth and the problems of ingrown hairs in the future.

Will it be noticeable if I only have laser hair removal for my upper lip?

Filed under: Hair Removal — Theresa Akbari, R.N. @ 7:24 pm

Question:
I am female 54 years old and thinking about laser hair removal for my face. If I just had my chin and upper lip done, does that look odd? I mean, will it be noticeable that some of my face is hairless while I have fine hairs on my cheeks?

Answer:
If you just have your chin and upper lip treated by laser hair removal, there should not be a noticeable line so to speak. The hair will blend nicely and will not be noticeable.  Often with facial hair some of the coarse hair will not grow back and others will become fine like the other facial hair.

Is there a permanent hair removal option?

Filed under: Hair Removal — Theresa Akbari, R.N. @ 10:37 am

Question:
I used to get electrolysis for facial hair removal but would like to try the permanent laser hair removal. How many times would I have to undergo the procedure on my chin to remove the hair permanently? Will it redden my face?

Answer:
There is no such thing as permanent hair removal with either system.  It is a permanent hair reduction, but you do experience no hair growth for years.  Then gradually hair does start to grow back but fine and it will never be the same amount, but very minimal growth. It rarely causes redness on your face. but if the hair is thick you may get some redness.  If your face gets red it is immediately after treatment, but this goes away after 15-20 minutes.  We; however apply cortisone cream, wich calms the redness in minutes.  It takes anywhere from 3 -6 treatment the depending on the thickness and color of hair.

Session length for laser hair removal?

Filed under: Hair Removal, Laser Treatments — Aubrie Cook, Clinical Esthetician @ 5:03 pm

Question:
I know that I will have to have several session of laser hair removal for permanent hair removal. But how long will I be at the office for each session?  I am getting the hair on both forearms removed.

Answer:
Yes generally you will need 3-5 treatments about 4-6 weeks apart and for the forearms each session will take about 30 minutes.  We ask that you come into the office 30 minutes prior to treatment for the numbing cream application so your total in office time for the forearms would be around 60 minutes.

Are Creams or products used during laser hair removal?

Filed under: Hair Removal, Laser Treatments — Dr. Paul S. Nassif @ 3:02 pm

Question:
I am allergic to a variety of skin products, from Nair to shaving cream products to moisturizers. I want to have laser hair removal for facial hair that has come in since I entered menopause.  Do you use any creams or products before, during or after the procedure? Are they hypoallergenic?

Answer:
Yes we usually do use a topical numbing cream containing lidocaine 30min prior to procedure.  Patients with allergies to lidocaine should not use this cream.  Most people tolerate it just fine without irritation.  Since the laser works by targeting the pigment in the hair, the hair must be present in the follicle at the time of treatment.  So we ask that you not use any depilitories (hair removing products), or have any waxing or tweezing done for about 1 month prior to treatment, however shaving or trimming is acceptable.  We even ask that you do shave the day prior to treatment to clear the area to be treated above the skin of excess hair and do not use any skin creams before coming into the office.  Along with sun avoidance sunscreen of an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended daily for at least 1-2 weeks after treatment to avoid any chance of hyperpigmentation.   A zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based sunblock is recommmended for patients with allergies to sunscreen chemicals.
