PRP contains growth factors that stimulate cellular regeneration and new tissue growth; it also promotes healing and repair of sun damage.

When performing microneedling with PRP, the first step is to numb the patient with a topical numbing cream. This allows for a more comfortable procedure. The next step is to draw the patient’s blood and spin it in a centrifuge. The blood is then put into a tube with a reagent that helps separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma is extracted, and will be applied during and after the microneedling treatment.

Microneedling is a fractional procedure that deposits the PRP into the dermal layer of the skin. To perform the microneedling, we use a new and advanced technology known as the Micro-Pen, or Dermapen. Unlike the roller, which re-uses the same needles for several treatments, is not sterile, and can tear the skin, these newer more advanced devices use disposable, sterile needle cartridges and are less damaging to skin. The Dermapen utilizes 11 or 12 tiny needles that penetrate the skin, causing microchannels, or “microinjuries.” The skin now wants to repair itself, and creates new collagen around the injuries. New fibroblasts form, and a healing cascade takes place.

In general, Microneedling can be used to:

Increase absorption of active ingredients, such as Platelet Rich Plasma or growth factors, into skin

Stimulate collagen production which promotes rejuvenation

Improve wrinkles, minimize pore size and induce skin tightening

Improve surgical, traumatic, burn and acne scars

Microneedling may also improve stretch marks and hyperpigmentation (brown spots and melasma). Results are expected in 2-4 weeks after treatment. Following the procedure, we may see luminosity in the skin that was not initially evident. Acne scars, deeper wrinkles, and fine lines usually require multiple treatments. 4 weeks after the initial procedure, we like to treat the patient again. The cumulative effect that takes place following multiple treatments yields a fantastic result.

A PRP with Fillers is also referred to as “Microneedling with PRP.” PRP, or “platlet rich plasma” is part of our blood.
