What is a submental lipectomy?

A submental lipectomy/neck lift is a surgery that aims to remove fatty tissues under the chin, address sagging muscles, and tighten the skin of the neck. The surgery is often performed in conjunction with neck liposuction in order to remove larger amounts of fat and address sagging skin or jowls that often occur with age.

Is a submental lipectomy right for you?

Candidates for submental lipectomy are those who maintain a healthy diet, remain physically active, and have no pre-existing medical conditions or active diseases. Patients who smoke will be required to quit for an extended period of time if they want to undergo the surgery. Smoking causes a decrease in the oxygen supply to the body, which can result in blood loss during surgery, and a number of complications including scarring, prolonged recovery or skin loss.

Patients will speak with Dr. Amron prior to a decision to undergo surgery and should have a healthy understanding of the realistic expectations of the benefits from a submental lipectomy. The surgery is most effective in patients who desire to reshape the neck through the removal of excess fatty tissue, through the correction of lax muscles and sagging skin. Patients who meet these criteria are those most likely to achieve more youthful looking necks with smoother and more natural contour.

During a submental lipectomy, a small incision is generally made beneath the chin or behind the ears depending on the specific goals of the procedure. The fat is suctioned with liposuction techniques or excised and the muscles are drawn tight before any excess skin is removed and the incisions are closed. The incisions are carefully positioned as to create the least amount of trauma to the surface skin. This minimizes scarring and creates the most natural looking results.

The submental lipectomy is often performed in parallel with standard facelift surgery or other facial cosmetic surgeries, such as rhinoplasty, when a single procedure alone has the potential to put the face out of proportion.

With more than 18 years of experience performing liposuction surgery including the submental lipectomy, Dr. Amron is one of Beverly Hills’ most trusted and respected cosmetic surgeons.

How is a post-auricular neck lift different than a regular neck lift?

The term post-auricular has to do with the placement of incisions. With a post-auricular neck lift, an incision may be made behind the ear. Every patient has unique anatomy and may require placement of incision in different locations to get ideal results. A neck lift may only involve an incision under the chin, behind your ear, in front of your ear or any combination of these incisions. I have a great deal of experience performing neck lifts. Please feel free to ask me any additional questions you may have regarding the procedure and I would be happy to answer them for you. Thank you and I hope this helps answer your question.
