Answering Your Faqs About Asian Rhinoplasty

Answering Your FAQs about Asian Rhinoplasty

1.) What is Asian rhinoplasty?

In case you don’t already know, we’ll start with a general definition of rhinoplasty itself. Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that changes the way a person’s nose is shaped from the inside out. The goal for any rhinoplasty is to give the patient a nose that is proportional, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Asian rhinoplasty is a type of rhinoplasty that caters specifically to those with Asian heritage and facial features.

2.)  What makes Asian noses different from non-Asian noses?

Even though we all have the same facial features, each feature has its own unique characteristics between different ethnicities. The characteristics unique to Asian noses include a low nasal bridge, a rounder and more bulbous nasal tip, and a wider nasal base. These aspects combine to create a nose where the tip is especially prominent while the bridge appears to blend in with the rest of the face.

3.) Does Asian rhinoplasty have its own subtypes?

There are no rhinoplasty subtypes that are strictly unique to Asian rhinoplasty, but the general subtypes can be applied to Asian rhinoplasty. It can be open or closed, nonsurgical or surgical, functional, or revision Asian rhinoplasty. Open or closed refers to the approach taken by the doctor when performing the surgery, specifically whether it will involve lifting the skin covering the inside of the nose. Functional rhinoplasty is more focused on improving how the nose works instead of how it looks, though it can be combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty. Revision rhinoplasty involves performing rhinoplasty on a patient who has already had at least one previous nose surgery. Each of these types can be performed singularly or in tandem with each other and they all can be performed on Asian patients.

4.) Describe the most common corrections made in Asian rhinoplasty

Going back to a previous question, Asians typically have noses with a low bridge, a round tip, and wide nostrils. As such, most of the time Asian rhinoplasty involves raising the nasal bridge, refining the tip so it isn’t as bulbous, and narrowing the nasal base so the nostrils aren’t so wide. This is by no means a complete list of the changes that doctors are capable of making on Asian noses, nor is it a definitive list of the changes made to every patient. However, these are the most common corrections made on Asian rhinoplasty patients.

5.) How long does the procedure take?

Generally speaking, Asian rhinoplasty takes between two and three hours to perform. Some patients require less time or more time depending on how extensive the rhinoplasty needs to be.

6.) How soon will my nose recover from surgery?

Again, this depends on how much work your nose actually needs. Most patients need a couple of weeks to get through the initial recovery period before they can start getting back to their normal routine and activities. Total recovery from Asian rhinoplasty can take anywhere from one to two years, but you won’t have to wait anywhere near that long before you start to see the results.

7.) Can any rhinoplasty surgeon do Asian rhinoplasty?

The answer to this one is a resounding NO. Asian rhinoplasty is a specific subtype of rhinoplasty that requires its own special considerations and approaches. Any rhinoplasty surgeon can reshape a nose, but not all rhinoplasty surgeons know how to specifically reshape an Asian nose. Your best bet is to find a surgeon who is an Asian rhinoplasty specialist with years of training and experience with Asian patients.
