How Male Facelifts Are Different

How Male Facelifts are Different

It should come as no surprise that facelift surgery is among the top five cosmetic surgeries in the country for men and women. With the right surgeon, you can remove up to ten years off your face in one simple procedure! Women hold the majority in the total number of facelifts performed last year, but each year men continue to boost their percentage. Whether the procedure is done for a man or woman, the principles and methods are pretty much the same. However, there are certain aspects of a male facelift that are different from a female facelift.

Male vs. Female Anatomy

Every face is unique, but there are characteristics you generally find on a man’s face that you don’t find on a woman’s face. Male faces are usually longer and larger than female faces. Specific facial features like the forehead, nose, and jawbone are also typically larger on males than females.

In terms of facial contouring, male features are usually sharper and more angular than female features. Another way to think about it is the males tend to have square contouring while females tend to have rounded contouring. This is why you often hear males described as having “strong” or “prominent” features while females have “soft” or “delicate” features.

Facial hair and Adam’s apples are two additional characteristics of male patients. Female patients can have these, too, but it is significantly less common.

Male Facelift Surgery

In general, men age in the same way that women do. Both genders start to lose definition and contouring in their faces as they get older due to a decrease in collagen and fiber production in their skin. Both genders also begin to develop wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Over time, the loose wrinkles and sagging skin add extra years to the face. However, because men have different facial anatomy than women, they have to be treated a little differently.

Facelift surgery helps give back some definition to the facial features so that the face has better contouring. Because male features are usually sharper and more angled than women, the surgery has to reflect that. Typically this involves lifting and tightening the skin around the jaw bone and forehead. The surgeon has to be careful not to tighten the skin too much around the neck due to the Adam’s apple. If the skin is too tight, it will be very uncomfortable for the patient! Because men also have facial hair that will continue to grow after surgery, the surgeon also has to watch how far back the skin is being lifted so the patient won’t be growing hair in any unusual places.

In terms of the surgical method, facelift surgery is basically the same between male and female patients. One key difference is the location of the incision. On female patients, the incision is typically made just behind the hairline to conceal it. However, male hairlines usually recede further than female hairlines with age, so the incision may have to go under the chin or at the spot where the ear connects to the side of the head. These locations help the incision remain inconspicuous as the patient continues to age.
