Differences Male Female Plastic Surgery

The Differences Between Male and Female Plastic Surgery

The Differences Between Male and Female Plastic Surgery

From breast implants to Botox injections, women have long outnumbered men as plastic surgery recipients. Male patients are considered more of a minority, though their numbers are rising steadily as plastic surgery becomes more mainstream. In terms of the actual procedures, there really isn’t a huge difference in how they are performed on men versus women; the main differences lie in the patient’s goals for surgery.

Why Men Get Plastic Surgery

Women aren’t the only ones who feel pressure to look their best – men do, too. Men can be the target of teasing and bullying or feel self-conscious about their appearance. They can want to look younger or feel more attractive to their partners, or present a vibrant, youthful appearance in an increasingly competitive workplace. All the same reasons that women have for getting plastic surgery are the same reasons why men decide to get plastic surgery. Plus, just about every surgery that can be performed on women can also be performed on men, and vice versa.

Male Patient Goals for Plastic Surgery

A patient’s goals for plastic surgery should generally have more to do with their anatomy than trying to match a celebrity. That’s because a patient knows their bodies or faces better than anyone else. They know whether they have a nose that’s too big, a stomach that needs a little toning, or a face that needs a little lifting. For male patients, these goals are usually oriented around having a more masculine face or a more athletic looking body.

A man’s face consists of strong features and sharp, well-defined angles. A strong jaw, a prominent forehead, and defined cheekbones all contribute to an attractive appearance in men. Male noses are usually larger than female noses and their chin has a more pointed look. These are all features of a male face rather than a female face. When a man gets plastic surgery on their face, the procedure is designed to cater to male anatomy. Male rhinoplasty, for example, isn’t going to make a male patient’s nose as small as a female nose.

When it comes to the male body, men are primarily interested in procedures like liposuction and abdominoplasty, which help them get a more toned and athletic middle. For men who suffer from gynecomastia, or excess glandular tissue in the breast, plastic surgery can help reduce the breast tissue to give the patient a normal-looking chest. Unlike female patients, men aren’t interested in obtaining that perfect hour glass figure. However, men can have problems with belly pooches or muffin tops, just like women. Procedures to help improve the male body are designed to make them look healthy and toned.

Male and Female Cosmetic Procedures

Again, the difference really isn’t about the procedure itself, but more about how the surgeon changes the patient’s appearance based on their anatomy. Men and women have different anatomy between their genders, but each individual patient also has their own unique anatomy. A plastic surgeon’s goal is to change a patient’s appearance in ways that cater to their gender as well as their individual needs. For example, male rhinoplasty surgery isn’t going to be the same for every male patient, just as female rhinoplasty isn’t the same for every female patient. Men can have their noses reduced or increased in size, just like women can. Male noses can be widened or narrowed or reshaped just like female noses. Taking gender into consideration is important, but it isn’t the sole factor in determining how a plastic surgeon approaches a cosmetic procedure. There’s a reason that nearly every procedure can be done on both genders.
